Literacy and Math Blocks

In terms of instruction, at the K-5 level our professional development has been focused on a consistent approach to literacy and math blocks, based on current research.  Teachers now have the same expectations for what instructional formats and components should be part of every literacy block. K-5 teachers also have the precise time allocations for each instructional format, again with the goal for consistency and coherence between and across grade levels.  Based on research, we believe that a focus on early literacy and numeracy will set our students up to be successful as they move through our system and through life in general.

We will be adopting a new reading program for K-5 teachers, called F & P Classroom.  This program comes with incredible resources, materials, and books for teachers and students.  The program will be funded through a federal grant, as we continue to devote an abundance of time and energy towards early literacy.  If our students are exposed at an early age to engaging books and literacy strategies, they will thrive as emerging readers, students, and members of our community and society at large.

In Math, after teacher-led professional development for two years, we have adopted a program called Go Math! K-8.  Similar to our approach to Lit Block, our goal is for more consistency and coherence when it comes to what and how we teach in our classrooms.
