Information about SHS

The School:

Springfield High School, with the River Valley Technical Center at Springfield, is a comprehensive public high school (Grades 9-12). The total enrollment is approximately 500 students. Enrollment in grade 12 is 100. The faculty numbers 51 including full and part-time teachers, administrators, counselors, and special education teachers. Thirty hold at least a Master’s degree. Two teachers have a doctorate degree.

Springfield High School is approved by the State of Vermont and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Marking period:

Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, SHS will have a semester block schedule with four 82-minute blocks and a 25-minute daily advisory.

The Community:

The Town of Springfield has a population of approximately 9,100 and is located in southern Vermont at Exit 7 off Interstate 91.

Rank in Class:

Rank in class is determined starting at the conclusion of the student’s third year. All courses (except courses taken on a Pass -Fail basis) are included in the calculation of the Grade Point Average. To determine the weighted class rank, accelerated classes and Advanced Placement classes have been given additional grade points in order to calculate a weighted grade point average. All students except Special Education students in the Occupational Development Program are included in the class ranking.

Graduation Requirements
Twenty-five (25) credits are required for graduation and the following requirements must be met:

English- 4.0 credits
Social Studies- 4.0 credits
Mathematics- 3.0 credits
Science- 3.0 credits
Art or Music- 1.0 credit
Physical Education- 1.5 credit
Health- 0.5 credit

Special Curriculum Features:

Springfield High School offers programs to meet the needs of all students. For gifted students we offer several Advanced Placement courses: Calculus, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Statistics, Studio Art, U.S. History. We also have accelerated college prep courses (AC) in American Studies, 20th Century America (history) French, German, Spanish, and Honors Biology. For college-bound students our college prep (CP) courses provide for in-depth study. For students with learning difficulties, we have individualized classes in which basic skills are stressed (GEN). In most of our English and Social Studies classes, students are not grouped by ability.
The River Valley Technical Center at Springfield offers extensive study in: Audio Engineering, Business Management, Carpentry, Computer Networking, Culinary Arts, Computer Aided Design CADD/Engineering, Principles of Engineering, Digital Design, Horticulture & Natural Resources, Health Careers, Human Services, Industrial Trades, Law Enforcement, Manufacturing, Emergency and Fire Managment, Law Enforcement, Hands On Computer System, and Technology Essentials.
