Welcome to SHS!

Welcome to Springfield High School, home of the Cosmos.  SHS is a NEASC accredited public high school.  At this time, we are working hard to implement recommendations from our recent NEASC report.

Additionally, we are working with the Vermont Department of Education to accomplish the required actions for schools identified in corrective action.  This is all very important work, as we strive to improve student performance.

AYP Update: Graduation Rate Up!

The State Department of Education recently released its list of schools identified as "in need of improvement" in accordance with NCLB.  At the high school level, there are three primary indicators used to determine whether or not a school makes "annual yearly progress."  Standardized test scores on the Fall NECAP tests (Reading & Math) are two of the indicators and the Graduation Rate is the third.

At SHS, for the second year in a row, we have improved our graduation rate such that we are no longer identified for that indicator.  Many thanks go to the hard working teachers, guidance counselors, and other support staff who embraced the idea that we cannot give up on students, and that all students can, and should, earn a diploma.

While we still have work to do in Math and Reading, I am confident that the improvements we have already made plus the ones we are still making, will yield results in student performance in the coming years!

Keep up the good work SHS!!

The second meeting of the Parent Advisory Group will be on Monday, March 12th at 5pm in the SHS Conference Room (Main Office).

The purpose of the new Parent Advisory Group, is to foster a two-way communication between school administration and parents.  The parents can learn about school programs, offerings, and procedures while giving input around potential changes, while the administration will share ideas for future improvement and gather insight into parent-specific concerns about the school

Recent Bomb Scares at SHS

In the past two weeks, the SHS community has been victimized by two separate bomb scares, one in RVTC and one on our side of the building.  In both cases, the building was evacuated and local fire and police were called to the scene.  Also in both cases, sweeps of the building were done by school officials and nothing was found.  Both cases are in the able hands of the Springfield Police Department.

On Thursday morning (Dec 1), the SHS community gathered together in the auditorium to discuss the effects on all of us, including the greater community outside our walls.

Police Chief Johnston, Fire Chief Thompson, and our truant officer, retired Vermont State Trooper Kevin Anderson joined Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Thibault in addressing the students.

Please be assured that these incidents are taken seriously and that the administration is following the applicable policies and our handbook in determining consequences for the offenders.
